How to use Google Analytics to set up link tracking

1. Create an Attendease website

2. Visit https://analytics.google.com/ and sign up for a Google Analytics account

3. Use the following configuration when signing up for an account:

What would you like to track? Website

Account Name: Name of your company, program, or event (the account can be used for multiple websites)

Website Name: Add the name of your website

Website URL: Add the URL of your website. You can find this on the Event Details screen, under the Event tab. Your event must be published for Google to access it. 

Google Analytics will require you to select a protocol - either http:// or https://. Paste in the URL without the protocol included and select https://

Industry Category: Select whichever industry makes the most sense for your use case.

Reporting Time Zone: Select the timezone in which the event takes place. This may make it easier to reconcile your data from Google with your data in Attendease.

Data Sharing Settings: Leave all of these checked.

4. Select “Get Tracking ID”

5. You will be presented with Google Analytics Terms of Service Agreement. Accept both and select “I accept”.

6. Copy the Tracking ID that is generated for you. If you have followed these steps you have just created a Google Analytics Account and a Property (the sub-account for your Attendease website).

7. Open your event dashboard, select the Website tab, then General Settings, then the Analytics tab. Paste the Tracking ID into the Google Analytics field.

Campaign URL Builder

1. Visit https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/campaign-url-builder/

2. Enter the website URL and campaign information

Website URL: The URL of your Attendease website. You can find this on the Event Details screen, under the event tap. You must include the protocol which will be https://. 

My link looks like this: 

https://link-tracking-test.attendease.com/

Note: If you want the URL to take visitors to the registration page rather than the homepage, ensure you use the full URL of the registration page. In my example, the URL would be:

https://link-tracking-test.attendease.com/register/

Campaign Source: Add the source of your campaign. Write the source in all lowercase letters with no spaces or special characters. 

You may further distinguish a particular link by adding the campaign medium, campaign name, campaign term, or campaign content. 

Once you have filled in the parameters the link will be generated below. Copy this link. It can now be used in an email campaign, on a marketing site, or in any other campaign where you will be driving traffic to the Attendease website. 

After adding a Campaign Source and Campaign Medium, my link looks like this:

3. Repeat step 2 for each of the campaign URLs you wish to set up.

Set Up Goals in Google Analytics

1. Visit your Google Analytics account and select the Conversions tab, then Goals, then Overview. 

2. Read the summary and then select “Set up goals”.

3. Select + New Goal.

4. Enter the following goal information:

Goal setup: 

  1. Select “Template”

Goal description: 

  1. Name your goal (I called mine Registration Conversion)
  2. Type: Select “Destination”

Goal details:

Destination equals to: (type your website URL here) then add /register/registration/thanks

Mine looks like this:

5. You can add an optional value if you would like to assign a monetary value to the goal (ie. the price of the event pass). Learn more about goal values here. You can also set up a funnel to specify a path you expect traffic to take towards the destination. Use it to analyze the entrance and exit points that impact your Goal. Disseminating the URL via Email Blast

1. Visit your event dashboard and select the Messaging tab.

2. Customize an email template so your email looks great and is on brand. Publish or republish your event so the changes to the template get pulled in.

3. Create an email blast and select the template you created.

4. Add content to the email including a call to action like “Click here to register”. Highlight the call to action and select the link icon from the menu above the email composing window.

5. Paste the link you created into the URL field and select “Insert”.

6. Add recipients and send your email. When users follow the link and land on your Attendease website, Google Analytics will now know they came from that campaign URL.

Note: Alternately, you can add the link to any website and drive traffic from that site to the Attendease website. Just remember to create a Campaign URL that reflects the different campaign source so you can distinguish between the two campaigns.

Reviewing the data

1. Visit the your Google Analytics account. 

2. Select the “Conversions” tab, then “Goals”, then “Overview”.

3. Under “Goals” on the interface, select “Source / Medium”. From here you can review the total goal completions (in this example registration conversions) by source and medium. In the example below, you can see that 2 registration conversions came from the “marketing-site” campaign and 1 registration conversation from the “email-blast” campaign.
